Switching to Organic Deodorant: Easy, Fresh, and Full of Benefits

Are you sick of feeling sweaty and concerned about the potentially dangerous chemicals in your existing deodorant? Then, it's time to shift and go organic. Imagine yourself raising your arms proudly and worry-free throughout the day. What a delightful sensation! Organic deodorants are crafted with clean, plant-based elements that are gentle on your skin and effective in neutralizing odor. However, switching to natural-organic deodorant could entail a detoxification period. Don't worry; we've got you covered. This article will guide you through transitioning to natural-organic deodorant, making it straightforward and beneficial. Get ready to embrace a fresh and chemical-free approach to underarm care for a new era of freshness and wellness. Understanding the Benefits of Choosing Organic  There are several potential benefits to using organic deodorants, which appeal to people for various reasons. Here are some of the most commonly cited: Health and Skincare: Reduced exposure to potential toxins: Organic deodorants do not contain harmful ingredients like aluminum, parabens, and phthalates, which pose potential health risks. Although scientific evidence is inconclusive, it still is a more natural approach to personal care. Gentler on the skin: Organic deodorants often use plant-based ingredients and essential oils. These substances are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions than synthetic fragrance components in conventional deodorants. That is advantageous for people with sensitive skin. No clogged pores: Unlike antiperspirants, organic deodorants do not block pores, allowing the skin to breathe and sweat naturally. Consequently, it will reduce the risk of ingrown hairs or clogged pores. Effectiveness and Convenience: Effective odor control: While organic deodorants may not entirely block sweat like antiperspirants, they can effectively neutralize odor by targeting bacteria that break down sweat. Various scents and textures: Organic deodorants come in a wide range of pleasant aromas and textures - from balms and sticks to sprays and roll-ons, catering to different preferences and activity levels. No yellow stains: Organic deodorant ingredients typically don't react with sweat. Hence, it doesn't cause yellow stains on clothing, a common issue with some antiperspirants. However, some natural-organic balm deos can stain clothing. Erbaviva deodorant is formulated with organic alcohol and essential oils to keep underarms dry without causing damage to even the most delicate fabrics, such as silk.  Environmental Considerations: Eco-friendly ingredients: Organic deodorants often use biodegradable and sustainably sourced ingredients, minimizing their environmental impact compared to conventional products with synthetic components. Cruelty-free: Many organic deodorant brands avoid animal testing and use vegan ingredients, appealing to individuals concerned about animal welfare. It's important to note that individual experiences with organic deodorants can vary. Some people may need to adjust to a different deodorant application. Others may require trial and error to find a brand and formula that works best for their body chemistry and lifestyle. Ultimately, deciding to switch to organic deodorants is personal, depending on individual priorities and preferences. Consider your own needs and concerns when exploring this option. Choosing the Right Organic Deodorant Finding the right organic deodorant can feel like a treasure hunt, but with the right tips, you'll be smelling fresh and fabulous in no time! Here's a guide to help you navigate the world of natural deodorants: 1. Know your ingredients: Aluminum-free: This is a big one for many who choose organic deodorants. Aluminum is often used in antiperspirants to block sweat glands, posing potential health risks. Organic deodorants typically rely on natural ingredients to neutralize odor instead. Baking soda: This common ingredient can effectively absorb odor but can also irritate sensitive skin. If you're prone to rashes, look for deodorants without baking soda or opt for a milder form like sodium bicarbonate. Arrowroot powder: This gentle starch is an excellent alternative to baking soda for those with sensitive skin. It absorbs moisture and helps keep you feeling dry. Coconut oil: This multitasking oil has moisturizing and antibacterial properties, making it a popular choice in organic deodorants. However, it can be comedogenic, causing clogged pores. So, if you're acne-prone, choose a deodorant with a lighter oil like jojoba or grapeseed. Essential oils: These concentrated plant extracts can add a lovely scent to your deodorant, but be sure to choose ones that are safe for topical use and dilute them properly to avoid irritation. Tea tree, lavender, and palmarosa oils are famous for their natural deodorizing properties. 2. Consider your lifestyle: Activity level: If you have an active lifestyle or live in a hot climate, you'll need a deodorant that can keep up. Look for formulas with ingredients like zinc oxide or magnesium hydroxide, which help absorb moisture and prevent odor. Scent preferences: Organic deodorants come in various scents, from earthy and herbal to floral and citrusy. Choose one that you enjoy, and that complements your natural body odor. Application method: Organic deodorants come in sticks, balms, creams, and sprays. Choose a form that you find easy and comfortable to use. Remember that the most important thing is to select a deodorant that you enjoy, and that works for your body. Transitioning to Natural-Organic Deodorant To successfully transition to organic deodorant, gradually introduce it into your daily routine. Be consistent in applying it daily to reap the rewards. Making the switch can positively change your body and the environment. Patch test before you commit: Even with natural ingredients, it's always a good idea to do a patch test before using a new deodorant. Apply a small amount to the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours to see if there's any redness, itching, or burning. Give it time to adjust: It can take your body some time to adjust to a new deodorant, mainly if you've used a conventional antiperspirant for years. Don't give up if you notice some extra sweating at first. Just keep using the deodorant regularly, and your body should adjust eventually. Embrace the detox: Some people experience a temporary increase in odor when switching to a natural deodorant. That is because your body is detoxing from conventional products' aluminum and other chemicals. Don't worry; this is normal and usually lasts only a few days. Bonus tip: Be mindful of your diet. Certain foods, like onions, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables, can break down in your body and create strong-smelling sweat. If you find that your natural deodorant isn't working as well on certain days, try avoiding these foods. Maintaining Freshness Throughout the Day To stay fresh throughout the day, prioritize personal hygiene and use organic deo regularly. Good hygiene is essential for remaining fresh throughout the day.  Shower regularly and thoroughly cleanse your underarms.  Dry your underarms completely before applying deodorant to ensure maximum effectiveness.  Reapply as needed, especially after physical activity or when sweaty. While it may take some time for your body to adjust to the switch, the benefits of using organic deodorant far outweigh any initial challenges. Go for it and experience the freshness and confidence of using an organic deodorant. Frequently Asked Questions: How Long Does It Take for the Body to Adjust to Organic Deodorant? Switching to organic deodorant may require an adjustment period for your body. Unlike synthetic deodorants, natural options allow your body to sweat and go through a detoxification process. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. During this time, your body is getting rid of toxins and adjusting to the new formula. Don't worry about odor control; organic deodorants can keep you smelling fresh. Plus, they're aluminum-free, giving you a healthier option for your underarms. Can Organic Deodorant Cause Skin Irritation or Allergic Reactions? Switching to organic deodorant can be an excellent choice for your skin sensitivity. While it's possible to experience some initial irritation or allergic reactions, there are steps you can take to prevent them. Look for natural alternatives that are free from harsh chemicals and fragrances. These deodorants often contain nourishing ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter, which can soothe and protect your skin. Give your body time to adjust, and you'll enjoy the benefits of a fresh and gentle deodorant. Is It Necessary to Detoxify the Armpits Before Switching to Organic Deodorant? You might be wondering if it's necessary to detoxify your armpits. The answer is yes! The detoxification process helps remove toxins and build-up from conventional deodorants. It can also reduce armpit sensitivity and make organic deodorant more effective. You may experience some odor and sweat during the transition period, but don't worry; it's temporary. Various detoxification methods, such as clay masks, apple cider vinegar, and exfoliation, can aid in this process. Can Organic Deodorant Effectively Control Excessive Sweating? Yes, essential oils like sage effectively reduce perspiration and eliminate odors. Erbaviva deodorant might be the solution you're looking for. Its gentle and nourishing ingredients help manage sweat without harsh chemicals. It's a fresh and healthy alternative that allows your body to sweat while keeping odor at bay. Say goodbye to excessive sweating and hello to a more natural and fresh feeling with natural deodorant. Are There Any Potential Health Risks Associated With Using Organic Deo? While they are generally considered safe, it's always a good idea to do an ingredient analysis and check for known allergens. Some people may experience a detox period or skin irritation during the transition, but these are usually temporary. Takeaway Switching to organic deodorant can be a refreshing step towards personal wellness and environmental care. Opting for natural ingredients like plant extracts and minerals means gentler treatment for your delicate underarm skin. Aside from that, it potentially reduces irritation and sensitivity.  Saying no to aluminum compounds linked to health concerns is a win for your body. Choosing organic also minimizes your environmental footprint by supporting sustainable farming practices and reducing the burden of harsh chemicals on our planet.  So, take a deep breath, feel confident about your scent, and try an organic deodorant. Your body and the earth will thank you for it.

How to Choose the Best Sunscreen

How to Choose the Best Sunscreen

We can all agree that sun protection is non-negotiable, but all sunscreens are not created equal. Here is a guide on how to choose the best sunscreen: Physical vs. Chemical Sunscreen Physical (or ‘natural’) sunscreen uses active mineral ingredients, like naturally broad spectrum zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which sits on top of the skin to shield it from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. This safe sunscreen ingredient works from the moment it’s applied, without irritating the skin. Chemical sunscreen most commonly employs controversial ingredients, like oxybenzone and avobenzone, to achieve broad spectrum coverage. The active ingredients penetrate the skin and absorb the sun’s rays and dissipate them via a chemical reaction, about 20 minutes post-application.  What’s controversial about chemical sunscreen ingredients? For starters, a recent FDA study found that high levels can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Which is especially concerning during pregnancy and nursing. Also, oxybenzone and avobenzone can be irritating to sensitive skin— like that of babies and young children. And those same common ingredients (even in small concentrations) have been found to be harmful to our fragile marine and coral reef ecosystems.  Non-nano + reef-safe Nanoparticles are so small that they are measured in nanometres—  1nm (nanometre)=1 billionth of a meter. In most countries, particle sizes over 100nm are considered to be non-nano. While still extremely small, non-nano particles will not enter the bloodstream and be absorbed by or harmful to marine life.  Water resistant  Water intensifies the sun’s rays, which means there’s greater risk for sun damage. Sunscreen labeled ‘water resistant’ has been independently tested to confirm it retains its SPF while swimming or sweating.  Full spectrum  UV (ultraviolet) rays are the most damaging to our skin. A full spectrum sunscreen protects against both harmful UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are present when it’s daylight, no matter the weather, and can even pass through glass. They penetrate deepest into the skin and are responsible for long-term skin damage, like aging and wrinkles. UVB rays are strongest in the summer months and cause visible sun damage - sunburns and tans. Yes, tans are a sign of sun damage. Remember, there is no such thing as a ‘safe’ tan! Both are major contributors to skin cancer formation.  SPF 30 SPF stands for ‘sun protection factor’ and measures how effectively the sunscreen protects against UVB rays.  No sunscreen can block all of the sun’s rays. Generally, experts recommend the use of at least an SPF 30, which blocks 97% of UVB rays. Beyond SPF 30, the difference in protection is negligible.  Beyond choosing your favorite among many different sunscreen types, here are some additional sun protective measures to keep in mind this summer: Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Be mindful that water, snow, sand and concrete reflect light and can increase the risk of sunburn. Wear sun protective clothing and hats Reapply sunscreen every two hours and more often if you are swimming or sweating.  Check your sunscreen’s expiration date! We hope you found this sunscreen guide helpful. Shop our non-nano, reef-safe full-spectrum sunscreens below— customer-favorites for 20-years.

Expecting? Here’s how to have a cool summer

Expecting? Here’s how to have a cool summer

Is your baby belly growing in unison with increasing summer temps? While there are some perks to a summer pregnancy — like spending the long days outdoors, stone fruit and vitamin D — the dog days of summer can exacerbate some not-so-pleasant pregnancy symptoms. Here are our summer pregnancy tips to stay cool and comfortable this season. Check your tags! Wear loose clothing made out of breathable, natural fibers, like linen and cotton, and avoid synthetic fabrics, like nylon or polyester. This allows your body to perspire to release heat, like nature intended. Stick to light-colors to help reflect the summer sun, dark colors will absorb heat — and warm you up.  *It’s good practice to avoid synthetics fabrics, especially when you’re expecting. Man-made fabrics, like acrylic, polyester, rayon, acetate and nylon, are often treated with harmful chemicals during production. The skin is the body’s largest living organ. It’s highly porous, allowing for harmful toxins and chemicals to be absorbed into the bloodstream and remain in human tissue for a long time. Get your 64 oz. +  The number one way to stay cool while pregnant is to stay hydrated! Keep sipping water (you need extra, anyhow, when you’re expecting) to keep your body sweating. Yes— sweating. When sweat evaporates, it cools the body and helps regulate your core body temperature. You may even want to consider making the switch to a natural deodorant, like our award-winning USDA organic Jasmine & Grapefruit Organic Deodorant Spray!  How to stick to the 8 x 8 rule?  Try adding a little flavor to your water by infusing it with fresh fruit. There are even added benefits too, like apples are iron-rich and grapefruit helps flush toxins.  Invest in a reusable water bottle. We like this glass one that reminds you to sip throughout the day.  Quench your thirst with water-rich fruits and veggies, like cucumber, celery, strawberries and watermelon.  Take a dip! Another way to beat the heat is to reinvigorate with a cool — not cold — shower. Pair it with our energizing Awaken synergy body wash, which stimulates the senses with essential oils of melissa, lemongrass and rose.  Sleep tight  It’s challenging enough to get a good night’s sleep when pregnant, and that goes double for hot summer nights. To ease into a cool, calm sleep mist your bed linens before getting into bed with water or our USDA organic Relax synergy body spray— crafted for body, room and linens. Plus, the soothing aromatherapy blend of lavender, rose and neroli essential oils calms the body and releases tension.   Put your feet up During pregnancy, extra fluid in your body can build-up (thanks gravity!) causing discomfort in the hands and feet, especially in the third trimester. And, it’s often worse in the warmer months.  When possible, take a seat and elevate your legs. Watch your sodium intake— too much salt in your diet causes water retention.  Reinvigorate tired and swollen feet, ankles and legs with our USDA Organic Refreshing Foot Balm. It’s crafted with cypress and grapefruit essential oils to naturally reduce water retention and stimulate circulation.

Healthy Living 2021 by Amie Valpone

The New Year is a time for all of us to reflect on the energy we want to bring into our lives. For most people this consists of cleaning up the inflammatory foods we're eating, understanding the process of natural detoxification of toxins and supporting our immune system. I've spent the last twelve years struggling with severe toxicity in my body that led to over a dozen chronic health issues, all of which elicited an inflammatory response from my immune system and left me with no other choice but to start questioning what I was putting into and onto my body.  While my situation was the extreme, we're all dealing with some level of a toxic burden in our bodies these days. I like to think of detoxification as minimizing our exposure to toxins from the most common ways they enter our bodies: the personal care products we use, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the foods we eat. While most people think of the term "detox" as a fad diet or a juice fast- it's anything but that.  The goal of detoxification is to support your body's natural ability to detoxify so you're able to flush toxins out of your system on a daily basis. What happens when we don't flush the toxins out? Health issues and chronic symptoms start to set in and that's exactly what we're all trying to avoid.  So, what are a few ways you can start to detox today? For starters, Erbaviva sells the most incredibly clean products I've been using everyday for years- their deodorant, lip & cheek balm and body oil are my favorite, which make me feel luxurious. I also recommend getting a water filter that removes heavy metals, mold and all other chemicals from tap water. And lastly, if you're looking to start a new clean eating plan for the New Year, check out my best-selling book, Eating Clean, for over 200 anti-inflammatory, tasty detox recipes. These recommendations for your health and wellbeing are a great way to start 2021 healthy and clean. Happy New Year!Amie Valpone

Skincare tips to make it through the changing seasons

Skincare tips to make it through the changing seasons

It’s time to step-up your skincare routine, neck to toe, in anticipation of the cooler seasons. Low temperatures and harsh winds can do a number on your skin, as can long, hot showers and central heating. Here are some winter skincare tips with all you need to know to avoid this winter woe. What is the moisture barrier? A healthy moisture barrier is the key to soft, glowing skin, no matter the season. The skin’s moisture or lipid barrier is the outermost layer of the epidermis and a natural defense against environmental and bacterial irritants. Made up of lipids or fats/oils, it helps retain water and moisture (by keeping it from evaporating).  How to protect your moisture barrier: In the cooler months, your moisture barrier can be more easily compromised, causing dull, dry and tight skin that is flaky and itchy.  Shelve your body lotion for a nourishing body oil—or layer the two. Not only do body oils deeply hydrate the skin, but they also lock in moisture and help support and repair the moisture barrier. Best applied when the skin is still damp, we suggest trying it right out of the shower. A baby’s skin is soft, smooth and plump. It’s the perfect example of a healthy moisture barrier. Our baby butter is a mama-favorite, but also a standby for grown-ups, too. After all, who doesn’t want baby-soft skin? It’s crafted with fair trade cocoa butter, which balances beneficial skin oils that can be stripped away by harsh winter weather. How to heal and keep your moisture barrier intact: Limit hot showers (not too hot!) to 10 minutes or less. The combination of hot water and soap can be especially damaging and actually remove moisture and natural oils from the skin.  Check your product labels for surfactants. Cleansers, like soap or body wash, often contain surfactants to create a rich lather and can break down natural oils and fats on our skin— harming the moisture barrier. Avoid synthetic fragrances, which can irritate the skin.  Get a good night’s sleep. When you’re sleeping, your body is able to heal itself. Hydrate from the inside out. Drink plenty of H2O and avoid dehydrating beverages like coffee and alcohol.  Our lip + cheek balm is a go-to healing balm for dry and chapped lips, cheeks, and hands. It nourishes the skin with rich shea butter and creates a beneficial barrier from dry and cold weather.

What to expect when making the switch to a natural deodorant

What to expect when making the switch to a natural deodorant

You've learned the reasons to switch to natural deodorant, bid farewell to your antiperspirant and committed to going au naturel. So, what’s next? Here is a breakdown of what to expect when switching to natural deodorant and how to make the transition successful. The Detox After using an antiperspirant for a *long* time, there is a period of adjustment— the body needs to rebalance itself as it adapts to a natural formula. After all, it’s learning how to sweat again. You may find that you sweat more initially. You may even notice some armpit stains (that’s not typically with use of a non-antiperspirant) as your body eliminates aluminum build-up and other toxins from the pores in your underarms.  During this purge the growth of odor-causing bacteria can increase, resulting in unpleasant body odor. You might even think your deodorant ‘isn’t working,’ but stick with it — it’s temporary.  This ‘detox’ typically lasts about two to four weeks, based on your own body chemistry.  How to get through it: No bacteria. No body odor. Keep your armpits clean and your BO in check with (more) frequent showers or body cleansing wipes for when you’re on-the-go. Hot baths or a sweat sesh opens-up underarm pores and help speed-up the ‘detox’ process. Wear loose clothing made with natural fibers, like cotton, silk or linen, to more comfortably allow your body to perspire.  Drink more water to flush toxins out — a good move, detox or not!  You may need to experiment with a different scents to land on the one that best complements and neutralizes your body’s natural scent.   Keep a travel-size version of your deodorant in your bag, like the 2 oz travel-size version of our award winning spray deodorants, to freshen-up throughout the day.

Why you should switch to a natural deodorant

Why you should switch to a natural deodorant

One of the most important (but also intimidating!) clean personal care swaps you can make is to give up your antiperspirant. on the fence? here’s why you should *finally* take the plunge— because toxins are the pits.  the truth about conventional deodorants antiperspirants rely on chemical ingredients, frequently aluminum, to prevent the body from sweating — by plugging the sweat ducts—  to eliminate odor.  but why the stink about sweat? sweat is the body’s natural cooling process (think of it like AC) and flushes toxins, too. In fact, sweat has no odor. underarm odor is caused when perspiration comes into contact with bacteria that can thrive in a warm, moist environment— like your pits! in addition to aluminum, antiperspirants are commonly formulated with parabens, triclosan, phthalates and propylene glycol. exposure to these toxic compounds has been linked to Alzheimer’s, certain cancers and reproductive/developmental issues. and because the skin is highly porous, anything that’s applied topically can be absorbed into the bloodstream and even potentially stored in the cells and tissue. while scents like ‘baby powder’ and ‘shower fresh’ sound appealing, they can be potentially harmful as chemical fragrance components in deodorants are largely unregulated due to an FDA loophole that classifies them as ‘trade secrets'. according to the Environmental Working Group, “The average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label. Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.” take note, this goes for any personal care products and cosmetics. whether applied to the skin or sprayed these pollutants have been tied to numerous health conditions, including allergies and asthma, and can have an effect on endocrine and reproductive systems. this is especially worrisome during pregnancy, when the fetus is developing. the natural alternative So what's the main reason to switch to natural deodorant? chemical-free deodorants utilize plant-based essential oils to effectively fight underarm bacteria to minimize body odor. no bacteria? no odor. and by allowing the body to perspire— you keep cool, naturally. plus, your pits are less likely to be irritated.  want to keep toxins out? the safest ingredients for topical use are (in most cases) closest to their natural form, so that they can be “integrated” into the body, absorbed and filtered without any health impact. so, read your labels and avoid the ingredients mentioned above! those same essential oils and natural ingredients that balance perspiration (and your underarm flora) also have a pleasant scent. erbaviva’s Lemon & Sage and Jasmine & Grapefruit deodorants rely on USDA certified organic essential oils, including lemon, tea tree and grapefruit, that possess powerful antibacterial properties.  shop our USDA certified organic deodorants below.

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away from Your Baby

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away from Your Baby

When warmer weather comes around, many of us start planning barbeques, trips to the lake, camp outs and hikes to find swimming holes. But with all that sunshine and adventure comes some challenges, one of those being avoiding pesky bugs. One of the most dreaded bugs we want to avoid are mosquitoes. Most of us are familiar with the perils of mosquitoes and we are sure that there have been countless conversations amongst the more vulnerable discussing theories about why they have become the target of these pests. While studies are typically inconclusive, one thing is for certain, mosquito bites are awful. More importantly, mosquitoes are sometimes dangerous as they can be carriers to diseases such as the Zika virus, Malaria, West Nile virus and Dengue fever. With this information, we definitely want to take precautions for all our loved ones and ourselves! Since young ones can’t fend for themselves, you have to figure out how to keep mosquitoes away from your baby. Doctors have yet to find a cure for mosquito bites, so it is best to try and avoid exposure altogether. Here are some ways to stay safe: Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, so keep your baby indoors during these times.  Mosquitoes are unable to fly against strong winds, so being near a fan is an effective way to keep mosquitoes at bay. Because mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, dress your baby in light colors and avoid exposing any skin. Stay away from any standing water where mosquitoes are more likely to breed.  If you find yourself in a situation where you know you and your family may be more susceptible to mosquitoes, you should use an insect repellent. Chemically synthetic insect repellents contain potentially harmful ingredients that are highly controversial. DEET or diethyltoluamide, is the most common ingredient in most insect repellents and while effective, high amounts of DEET can be harmful, so opting for a natural, effective solution is always more advisable. The American Academy of Pediatrics firmly states that all bug repellents, even DEET-free ones, should not be used on babies younger than 2 months old. What is the best insect repellent for babies? Erbaviva Children’s Buzz Spray is a great alternative to ordinary repellents. It is made with a medley of organic and biodynamic ingredients that specialize in repelling bugs. With catnip, lemongrass oil and citronella as its most active ingredients, this spray is a wonderful and an all-natural bug remedy. The product also contains 95% certified organic ingredients. We love the fun packaging of the Children’s Buzz Spray bottle but Erbaviva also offers the Buzz Spray in a more simple and clean bottle. No differences in ingredients or efficiency, just a different look.                                   According to Science Daily, catnip is approximately ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than the chemical DEET. And while studies sometimes conflict regarding the efficacy of citronella, the oil has stood the test of time and is still widely used in many cultures. Citronella has been used in the united states as a plant-based insect repellent for nearly 70 years and has been registered by the environmental protection agency as a non-toxic biopesticide. To ensure that repellents work properly, we recommend reapplying every 30 minutes especially during sun down, sun up and early evenings, when mosquitoes are the most active. The frequent application of repellent is why we strongly recommend that you opt for a natural, plant-based option for the body's largest organ, the skin.
